DST sponsors second Science Camp at SMVDU | | | Early Times Report Katra June 25: The Second five-day, Department of Science & Technology (DST), sponsored "Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)", Science Internship Camp was inaugurated by the V.C Prof. R.N.K.Bamezai, on June 20 at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. During the inaugural function Prof Bamezai delivered the 2nd Inspire Expository lecture on the theme "What makes us different - sense or nonsense - a Genomics Perspective?" Mata Vaishno Devi University is organizing the second such camp this year: the first camp held from April 19 -23, 2010 was attended by over 350 students from different states. Twenty eminent academics and fellows belonging to institutions of excellence in science and technology of various academies in the country have arrived to counsel students during the camp. The Camp has attracted over 250 students from Kashmir division and the rest hail from Jammu Division. There are over 250 girl students among the 550 students who have registered for the camp. In all over 55 sessions of scintillating and exciting discourses on science have fixed in the programme. INSPIRE as it is named will be for the period o f 25-29, June 2010. It is an innovative programme of DST with an objective to communicate to the young participants the excitement of creative pursuits of Science, attract talent to the study of Science at an early stage and build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding Science and Technology system in R&D base. The camp is meant for the top per cent performers in 10th Board Examination, who are presently pursuing science in XI and XII standard. All students will be hosted on SMVDU Campus. During inaugural function, Prof V C Tiwari, Sr. Scientist, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Prof Deepak Dhar, TIFR, Mumbai, Prof S. K. Khanduja, Punjab University and Prof A K Susheela from Florousis Foundation and Dr. S. K. Wanchoo, Coordinator, INSPIRE, SMVDU spoke before the Inaugural Expository lecture delivered by Prof. Bamezai. A vote of thanks was proposed by Ar. Sumant Sharma from SALD, SMVDU.
