Opposition up against fuel price hike | Describe move as anti-poor, ill-conceived; demand roll back of prices | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 26: Opposition parties today staged noisy protest against decision of hike in prices of petroleum products, slamming the Congress led UPA for not concerned about the suffering of the common man. Hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists took to streets this morning protesting against steep hike in petroleum products prices. Led by district Jammu president, Rajesh Gupta, the activists converged at Kachi Chawni Chowk and chanted anti-government slogans. Carrying placards and empty LPG cylinders, the protestors demanded immediate roll back of the decision to provide relief to common masses. "The history is witness to the fact that people have to suffer whenever the Congress is in power. The Congress misleads the voters during the election campaigning with the pleasing slogan and on coming in power unfortunately forgets all pious platitudes, slogans and promises," said Rajesh Gupta, district Jammu president while addressing the protestors. He alleged that the ruling Congress-led UPA during the last over one year has taken several "anti-poor" decisions as a result of which the prices of essential commodities have gone up manifold. He charged the Congress for working for the benefit of a handful of big houses and black-marketers. Criticising the Centre for hike in fuel prices, the state unit of CPI (M) said the "callous and anti-people" decision is a crucial blow to the common man, who is already suffering due to the runaway increase in the prices of food and essential commodities. "The Central government has shown its callous and anti-people character by hiking prices of petro products," CPI (M) state secretary M Y Tarigami said and demanded immediate roll back of the prices. "The decision of the central government to inflict a steep rise in fuel prices is a cruel blow to the people, who are already suffering due to the runaway increase in the prices of food and essential commodities," he said, adding that the decision to deregulate the price of petrol is going to prove disastrous for the economy and the country, he said. Meanwhile, the activists of Kranti Dal took out a rickshaw rally to protest increase in prices of petroleum products. Led by Kranti Dal president Raj Roop Singh Chib and general secretary Pritam Sharma, they condemned the decision of Central government to increase the price of petroleum products. The Kranti Dal activists along with 20 rickshaws assembled near Women Cell, Canal road and moved towards Bhagwati Nagar. The protestors chanted slogans against the UPA government, saying hike in fuel prices would hit common man. They alleged that the Congress has totally failed to control the petrol, LPG prices and demanded that the government should immediately take back decision. Pritam Sharma asked the government to reply the people who are suffering from the rises in fuel. He said that the main motto of this rally was to make aware the general masses about coming time that they have to travel on rickshaw and cycles if the fuel prices are not controlled. "The decision of the Union Government to hike the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG and kerosene oil is highly condemnable and deplorable since it would hit the middle class also. It is a rash, ill concealed and ill implemented decision," alleged Bharatiya Chaitanya Party (BCP). The Party alleged that the Government was trying to move towards decontrolling the prices of essentials but such a policy in a country like India where still millions of people approximately 30 crores are living Below Poverty line (BPL) was suicidal. Meanwhile, scores of Shiv Sena (Bal Thackrey) activists also took to streets and staged protest against the UPA government for increasing the prices of petroleum products. The protestors led by Ashok Gupta, president Shiv Sena blamed the government of putting extra burden on poor masses and warned that the organisation would launch series of protest against the government's move.
