Row over cut in pass percentage in Bed course | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 25 The authorities of University of Jammu (JU) has decided to inflict another jolt to the education system of the Jammu region by scrapping eligibility criteria for admission in one year regular B.Ed course by 5 percent and making it at 40 percent and mere pass percentage for reserved category students. In an advertisement issued by JU on Friday, clearly mentions the slashing of the eligibility criteria without citing any reason. In Jammu region there are 76 private B.Ed colleges including one Government B.Ed College. Every year thousands of students enrolled in the private colleges mostly from neighboring states. Few days ago, Jammu University also scrapped entrance test for Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA). This sparks sharp reaction among various stake holders and also students held protest demonstrations allegedly against this anti-student and anti-education step of the University authorities. They also said that the University administration was working only providing benefits to the some influential persons. It is pertinent to mention here that out of 75 private B.Ed colleges in Jammu region, most of them are owned by politicians including sitting ministers and minting money from the poor students. More then 50 percent of private colleges are in district Jammu alone. When contacted with Director Colleges Development (DCD) JU Prof Rajiv Gupta, he stated that the eligibility for B.ED courses has been reduced only for current year that too on the direction High Court. About the allegations of decline in the education standard because of decline in eligibility criteria, Prof Gupta refuted the allegations and said that instead it would provide a chance for the candidates having less marks to get the B.Ed degree and contribute to the development of the society.
