Of information department's orphaned website | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 26: Three months ago Early Times wrote that the information department had no information about state's journey towards normality. The report quoting the official website of the government of Jammu Kashmir read: "This portion is under updation." Three months down the line, the particular portion continues to be under `updation.' The information department, it seems, is in a fix. The tourist season is at its peak. Thousands of local and foreign tourists have arrived in the `tourist paradise' notwithstanding the travel advisories of their respective countries to the contrary. Most of the European countries have advised their nationals not visit what they call hub of terrorists. The Americans too have warned their citizens against visitng Kashmir. The official website could have effectively projected Jammu Kashmir as a state fast returning to normality. But, the information department has not provided the necessary material to attract the tourists. Preferring anonymity, a senior official of the vital department admitted the lapse. According to him, the website showed Ghulam Nabi Azad as Chief Minister of the state even when Omar Abdullah had completed two months in office. The error was rectified when a Kashmir based newspaper highlighted the lapse. "They must have forgotten to upgrade the website", he said jokingly. Expressing sympathy with the junior officers of the department, he said: "They are highly qualified and can deliver effectively. But, they are made to chase the ministers. Unfortunately the ministers at times direct them to take the Mem Sahib for shopping or their children to the schools. This is terrible waste of talent and resources by the department. The director must do a favour to the department by rescuing them from bondage and entrust the job of mainating and upgrading the website to them." One such official chose to pour out his heart to Early Times. We do most of the work but the Director and other officials take credit. He admitted misuse of authority by the director and the ministers. "At times my colleagues have to take Mem Sahibs for shopping to keep the minister in good humor", he lamented. Fully aware of what publicity can do, the director often graces functions hosted by NGOs. Being the chief guest or a guest of honour in a function makes him feel on top of the world. How can he find time for the shabbily designed, poorly informed and orphaned website?
