Separatists' plan to sabotage Amarnath yatra
6/27/2010 11:45:16 PM

Continued angry demonstrations in protest against the killing of several youths in firing and teargassing by the security forces in the Kashmir valley is indeed a disturbing signal and that too when groups of youth show no fear or hesitation in defying curfew restrictions.Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,is desperate.senior functionaries of the police and the paramilitary forces are worried.Nobody in the Government or in the security agencis has a solution for resolving the current turmoil. It is condemnable when teenagers get killed in police firing or tearsmoke.Everybody is quick in berating the security forces for having opened fire here or there to quell violence. The security personnel are blamed for having fired pellets or bullets which hit the heads of protesters.Political leaders and senior functionaries of the police and the paramilitary forces want the security personnel to first try firing in the air and then open fire which could hit legs of the
protesters. It is easier said than done and that too when the security personnel are forced to open fire failing which they could be killed or butchered by the groups of protesters wearing threeatening faces. When one killing leads to another in the wake of bigger violence one is bound to attribute motives to those who give a call for shutdown and for holding protest rallies and to those who indulge in violence. If the separatists give repeated calls for observing shutdowns they do it to ensure that their relevance is not lost. They incite people to take to the streets and indulge in violence because they know public protests on a largescale could deflate the ruling coalition balloon. It can trigger unr est, turmoil leading to a major constitutional and political crisis in the state.By now these separatists have realised that these public protests and scenes of violence were more effective in forcing Delhi to settle the Kashmir issue than through kicking
up militancy related violence. As the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference(G),Syed Ali Shah Geelani has framed a calender for shutdowns, which has received support from other separatist groups, one has no hesitation in sensing a bigger mischief in the programme.Has the valley been placed on a volcano by the activities and utterances of the separatists ?This question has assumed added significance when Geelani and others are blamed for sabotaging not only the upcoming Amarnath yatra but for creating scare among those youths belonging to the migrant families who had been appointed on different Government posts and were planning to serve in Kashmir.Geelani and others have already threatened to paralyse normal life in Kashmir if the dur ation of the Yatra was not reduced from two months to 15 days. With reports doing rounds that the Government was not prepared to concede Geelani's demand the hardliners have intensified activities aimed at escalating the level of
violence which could force a large number of pilgrims to cancel their trip to the holy cave.Besides this the separatists do not want the security and political scnario in Kashmir to show signs of marked improvement which could encourage Delhi for keeping silent on the demands of the separatists.Accordingly the move is to allow the violence graph to register an upward curve so that tourists avoided visiting Kashmir.Reports reveal that till 10 days ago the valley witnessed heavy tourist traffic which had brought smiles on the faces of hoteliers, traders, houseboat owners and transporters. They now wear sullen faces after majority of tourists cut short their stay and others cancelled their reservation.Reports said that those tourists who felt inconvenienced owing to prolonged spell of shutdowns and violence have left for Kargil and Leh to spend the summer recess.Separatists want to keep the cauldron of violence boiling so that both Islamabad and Delhi, which
seem to have sidelined them, were forced to involve leaders belonging to different separatist groups in the ongoing parleys.Separatists know that peace and normalcy in Kashmir can prove a swan song for them and hence inciting people to violence alone could ensure their political survival
