Omar Abdullah's opposition to Afzal Guru's hanging dumb-founding | | |
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 27: Is Omar Abdullah Chief Minister? Is he a constitutional authority? Or, is he a spokesperson of terrorists, who want to create anarchy in the rest of the country like he has done in Kashmir by issuing from time to time militant-friendly statements? Is Omar Abdullah part of the Indian political establishment or is he the spokesperson of terrorists, who want to dismember India? What is New Delhi doing to make Omar Abdullah discharge his constitutional obligations? And, what is the Congress doing to make Omar Abdullah observe restraint and not to do anything that has the potential of vitiating the state's already rather vitiated atmosphere? These are some of the most important questions which warrant satisfactory answers. These are some of the questions which must make right-thinking people and well-wishers of India sit up and discuss and decide if what Omar Abdullah has been saying and doing in the state since his elevation to the state's highest executive office is in the interest of India and if they come to the conclusion that Omar Abdullah's activities as Chief Minister are complicating further the already complex situation in Kashmir, then they should ask New Delhi to act against the controversial Chief Minister so that the situation is retrieved on time and right signal goes across the state that New Delhi shall not tolerate anything non-sense. Why should the friends and well-wishers of India and those who believe in the unity and integrity of India and the rule of law sit up to review the working of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah? They should sit up because Omar Abdullah has done all that he could to defend and encourage terrorists and merchants of death and destruction. He has not just challenged the criminal justice system. He has directly sought to instigate the Kashmiri Muslims against the Indian judicial system in order to make common cause with the Kashmiri separatists. How else should one interpret what he said on Saturday in Srinagar regarding Afzal Guru, who was involved in the December 13, 2001 Parliament terrorist attack and who was sentenced to death by the highest court of the country, Supreme Court? What did Omar Abdullah say in this regard? According to one of the leading Srinagar-based English language dailies, Greater Kashmir, "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has voiced his opposition to the death sentence given to Mohammad Afzal Guru for his involvement in the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament". The report in the said daily has, among other things also said that "Omar (is) considering (to) intervene in the issue to stop the hanging, as it could create…complications in Kashmir similar to the ones created by the execution of Kashmiri leader Muhammad Maqbool Bhat in 1984 in Delhi's Tihar Jail"; that "Omar (is) consulting legal experts on his position in the Afzal Guru case and trying to determine whether his opinion would be sought, as Afzal is a Kashmiri national"; that "he has also asked the Advocate General of Jammu & Kashmir to give his opinion on the technical and legal aspects of Guru's case"; and that "he would not put his signature on the death warrant if he was required to do so." Is their any ambiguity in what Omar Abdullah has said? There is no ambiguity. What he has said is as clear as crystal and no state worth its name could ever accept what Omar Abdullah has said. He has sided with Afzal Guru, who sought to blast the Indian Parliament and eliminate the country's top leaders and law-makers, and he has sought to coerce the Indian State by referring to what happened in the wake of the execution of Maqbool Bhat. He has, in addition, subverted the very concept of the Indian nation by describing Afzal Guru as a "Kashmiri national." India is one nation and all Indians are Indian nationals. This is not for the first time that Omar Abdullah has made controversial and militant and separatist-friendly statements. He has been making such statements ever since the day he jumped into the state's political arena. So, what he said regarding the death sentence to the dreaded terrorist Afzal Guru was on expected lines. The question is: What is it that New Delhi and the Congress have done to rein in Omar Abdullah? Both New Delhi and the Congress have behaved in an irresponsible manner so far. It can be legitimately said that New Delhi and the Congress have failed the Indian nation in the manner in which Omar Abdullah has been seeking to fail the Indian State. Enough is enough. New Delhi and the Congress must assert before it is too late. Omar Abdullah just cannot be allowed to subvert the Indian institutions and go scot-free.
