EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 29: Noted Theatre critic Ravinder Kaul has represented India at 25th Congress of International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) held at Yerevan, Armenia as a speaker from the Indian National Section of the IATC.
Kaul presented his paper "Redefining Femininity in Indian Modern Theatre" in the Congress which was widely appreciated for its scholarship and research. Those who spoke after the presentation of the paper appreciated the efforts of the author in tracing the origins of theatre in India and the glorious theatrical traditions in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
While introducing him to the scholarly audience, Randy Gener, theatre critic from New York and winner of 2010 Deadline Club Award for Best Arts Reporting in New York, said that Ravinder Kaul was a well known theatre critic whose reviews were widely read on the internet and whose name was respected among the theatre critics across the world.
In his paper, Ravinder Kaul liberally quoted from Nilmat Purana, writings of Abhinava Gupta and Kshemendra, among other writers of the subcontinent, in order to emphasise the position of femininity in Indian theatre in general and in the theatre of Jammu and Kashmir in particular. He gave examples of powerful woman characters from Indian plays like Savitri in Mohan Rakesh's play Aadhe Adhure (Halfway House), Benare in Vijay Tendulkar's play Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai (Silence, the court is in session) and Padmini in Girish Karnad's play Hayavadana (The Horse Faced) on the one side and well known characters of Bernarda Alba in Federico García Lorca's play The House of Bernarda Alba, Mother Courage in Brecht's play Mother Courage and her Children, and Shen Te in Brecht's play Good Woman of Setzuan, emphasizing that while the powerful women characters of Indian plays were successful in retaining their femininity, the women in the western plays were compelled to acquire male characteristics in order assert their individuality in a male dominated world.
Ravinder Kaul illustrated his point with the help of visuals from various plays and also presented a video of the play 'Kasturi Mrig' written by Vasant Kanetkar and directed by Mushtaq Kak for Shri Ram Centre Repertory, Delhi in order to highlight the position of women in Indian society as reflected in theatre of the day.
During the course of various Sessions of the Congress, Ravinder Kaul highlighted the status of theatre in Jammu and Kashmir State and the steps taken by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in promoting theatrical activities through Theatre Festivals, workshops and financial assistance to various theatre groups. He particularly laid emphasis on the recent efforts of the Academy in reviving theatrical and other cultural activities in the trouble torn Kashmir valley after a gap of more than two decades.
