Poonch villagers ferry water on horses | Pipeline installed in 1978 but no supply till date | | EARLY TIMES REPORT POONCH, June 29: In the era of robot and modern technology of 21st century, it seems 16th Century is in Poonch when people used to ferry drinking water on horses as several villages in this border district lack the drinking water and immediate sources of water are located at about 2-4 kilometers distance. At least 1000 residents living in two villages in Mandi tehsil of border district Poonch are suffering a lot for the last 32 years due to non-availability of water in the area. Though the government is liberal in giving funds for improving basic amenities, especially in the far-flung areas, residents of Goday Nakh and Markote villages, in the absence of water supply through pipes, have to ferry water on horses. The residents complained that even as Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department Poonch had laid pipes in the villages in 1978, these hardly provided water. They added that since the department did not supply water through pipes and there was no other source of water in the areas, they had no other option but to ferry water on horses. As per sources, Goday Nakh villagers ferry water on horses from the Kumbliyaan Nullah and Bedar Nullah at a distance of three kilometers while the residents of Markote fetched water from the Nadi Baan Nullah, at a distance of 2 km from the village. "We have no other source so we get water from the nullahs," Mohammad Ashraf a local of Goday Nakh said, adding "We have even deputed people for getting water from streams on their horses. I don't know whether the department will ever supply water to our areas through the pipes." Another resident Nusrat Ara of Markote said, "Since I need water for domestic chores, the amount of water we ferry on horses is inadequate and we have to go to the stream ourselves to get it." The question of providing water to these areas have been raised in three sessions of J&K Legislative Assembly by the local MLA Ajaiz Ahmed Jan but the department has adopted silence over the issue and nothing is being done to provide water supply to the area. "Yes I raised voice for providing immediate water supply to these areas in the assembly and he is still awaiting a response from the department", MLA Ajaiz Jan said. He, however, added that the department has sent a cooperative Executive Engineer few months ago and he is planning to do something on ground. When contacted, Executive Engineer Choudhary Abdul Latief feigned ignorance over the problems being faced by the local people, saying he has joined the department few months back. However, he assured that the residents of these villages would be provided water at any cost.
