Riot police kept ready for Amarnath pilgrims' protection | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 30: To keep rioters and unruly groups of people away from Amarnath pilgrims, 1,000 odd cops of riot police have been kept ready at PCR here. Drawn from different police training schools in the region, these cops were specially trained in dealing with rioters, police sources said. "They have been equipped with anti-riot equipments," the sources informed. Sources said the decision to keep these cops in ready-to-go position was taken in a high-level meet held at PCR hours after the first batch of Amarnath pilgrims was flagged off this morning amid tight security. The need in this regard was felt in view of the tense situation in Kashmir, the sources added. There was a feeling in official circles that the tense situation in Kashmir could be a ploy of separatists and anti-national elements to disrupt the pilgrimage as such a step was likely to evoke countrywide protests. If the situation demanded, the riot police cops would immediately be dispatched to Kashmir to provide fool-proof security cover to the pilgrims. Sources said the strategy to ensure incident-free month-long pilgrimage was discussed threadbare in the meeting. Apart from IGP Ashok Gupta and divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal, the meeting was attended by other senior civil and police officers, including DIG Farooq Khan and SSPs. The IGP asked the field officers to take all the requisite steps to ensure that the yatra passed off peacefully. Nearly 150,000 people have registered themselves for the journey to the cave this year. Sources said as many as 3,000 BSF personnel had arrived in Kashmir in the last couple of days "to strengthen the security cover for the annual Amarnath yatra". Fifty companies of Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF) and police were also part of the multi-tier security arrangement. In addition, army troops would guard the mountain heights. BSF personnel would guard the trek route. CRPF and police would guard the camp sites, the sources added. Cops in mufti had also been deployed in the winter capital to keep an eye on subversive elements. Special instructions had been issued to hotel owners to contact police if any suspicious person check in their business establishments.
