Congress wants NC leaders to behave responsibly | Berating CRPF irks 'national' party | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 30: With veteran Congress leader Prof Saif-u-Din Soz 's admonishment to a NC cabinet minister for his 'remarks' against CRPF in Valley, the party leadership has already made it loud and clear that it doesn't want and like the way NC has been berating and bashing the CRPF deployed in valley for what they allege the troops responsible for fomenting the trouble. Congress annoyance is not over with Soz's reprimand as almost all the Congress ministers and senior leaders are unhappy the way NC sought to stigmatize CRPF. The differences in approach and strategy over viewing and even handling the ongoing crisis between NC and Congress have now come to the fore even as both Chief Minister and his cabinet minister himself did some damage control efforts by giving U-turn to their earlier statements only next day, there are many Congress leaders who openly fume about the way only CRPF was sought to be made the target and centre of all the controversies. Several leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress do not cherish the way some National Conference leaders keep on berating the CRPF for "killing" civilians in Kashmir. "When you are in power you need to behave in a responsible manner", said one senior Congress leader while referring to the recent remarks made by the Minister. He said "it is bad politics if you enjoy the comforts of power on one hand and on the other try to perform the role of an irresponsible opposition leader." Even the Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, wanted the National Conference leadership to handle the current situation carefully and avoid resorting to blame-game strategy. He said the Congress was committed to support the National Conference in dealing with the turmoil in Kashmir but no side should try to vitiate the atmosphere by making irresponsible statements. Other Congress leaders said that NC ministers and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, should know it fully well that the paramilitary forces, including the CRPF, operate under the control and command of the state authorities and the police. They said invariably senior police officers guide the CRPF as far as tackling the protesters was concerned. A senior Congress leader expressed his deep dismay over the way Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, was trying to emulate Mufti Mohd. Sayeed as far as the latter's demand for withdrawal of troops and the repeal of the AFSPA was concerned. He said that when the Chief Minister is seen endorsing the demand for withdrawal of troops and the AFSPA besides raising his voice against human rights violations it provides full encouragement to the separatists and their supporters. In the meantime, Ravinder Sharma, ridiculed those political leaders who had started demanding resignation of Omar Abdullah led Government. He has criticised those who are demanding imposition of the Governor's rule. He said if there is turmoil, violence or some casualties in a state "you cannot demand dismissal of the Government." He referred to a number of incidents in which the Naxals and the Maoists killed a number of CRPF soldiers in Chhattisgarh and elsewhere in the recent weeks but nobody has demand the resignation of the Governments in those states where the Maoists have raised their head. Sharma said that since the situation was serious in Kashmir all mainstream political leaders need to cooperate with the state Government in defusing the crisis which had its roots in the plans and designs of the separatists.
