Call to suspend fuel supply withdrawn | | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 30: After suspending diesel and petrol supply to Kashmir for full day today following incident of 'serious injuries' inflicted to the tanker drivers in the valley due to stone pelters, Jammu and Kashmir Tankers Association withdrew its strike call to suspend fuel supply deciding to load their vehicles tomorrow. The J&K Tanker Owners Association had stalled its operations demanding Chief Minister's immediate intervention in the case. The Association alleged that some miscreants allegedly hiding nearby Town Area Committee, Sumbal at Chanderkote, where the petrol tankers have to stop for a brief halt for checking, had come out in the dark at 2 p.m. on Tuesday night and attacked the tanker drivers. "Our three drivers including Kewal Singh plying the tanker number JK02E 7125 received serious injury in his eye, Ranjit Singh, driver of tanker No JK02S 9885 had to escape for life with a broken arm while third got fracture in his leg," said Annan Sharma, president All J&K Petrol Tankers Owners Association, adding, "We suspended the movement of our vehicles forthright and stopped the loading of the petrol for Valley with immediate effect." He said that miscreants, who came out of the dark, were large in numbers who rained stones on the standing vehicles that left grievous injuries to the drivers and conductors besides causing great damaged to 35 tankers. Sharma further alleged, "Our drivers were also beaten and roughed up by the assailants who smashed doors and window panes of the vehicles while no security cover was available for the stranded drivers and the vehicles." He added, "I had written a letter to the administration seeking security cover to tankers supplying petrol and diesel to various parts of Valley but they did not pay any heed to our concern resulting in serious injuries to drivers." He however, said that the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr Pawan Kotwal and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Ashok Gupta called a meeting of tanker owners this afternoon and assured that necessary security would be provided to them. "They have assured that security personnel would escort the tankers after they cross Jawahar Tunnel. The Chief Secretary, SS Kapur had also assured us telephonically that tight security cover would be provided to tankers entering Valley. The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir would hold a meeting to review the security for tankers on July 2," he said. He said that the Divisional Commissioner Jammu has assured to provide cash compensation of Rs 25, 000 each to the injured drivers. He also assured to provide compensation for damaged vehicles. Meanwhile, Devender Singh, general secretary of the Association said that until Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself does not approach the association and holds the meet with them, the status quo would remain maintained. "Today, we have stopped the loading for Kashmir, if no reaction comes from the Chief Minister, supply for Jammu too would be halted from Thursday and the onus would lie on the government only," he said, adding that in wake of first day of the Amarnath yatra from Jammu, the association has spared Jammu's loading for a day. Another member of the association said that the attack on the vehicles at Ganderbal was fraught with double risk with vehicles getting damaged and persons receiving serious injuries on one hand and highly inflammable petrol loaded in the tanks standing vulnerable to bigger mishap on the other that would have caused greater damager to lives and properties also.
