Early Times Report
Jammu, June 30: The All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leadership is keen to dispel an impression having gained ground that Kashmiri separatists were opposed to the annual Amarnath pilgrimage. "We are not opposed to the yatra. In fact millions of Kashmiris have been welcoming yatris every year which indicates our faith in secular traditions,"said a senior APHC leader,Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat.
When asked whether the current turmoil in Kashmir was part of a plan of sabotaging the annal pilgrimage he shouted "No,No."He said the yatra has nothing to do with the current wave of turmoil and unrest.Asked to comment on Syed Ali Shah Geelani's demand for curtailing the yatra period from two months to 15 days Bhat said "well Gilani Sahib has not opposed the yatra but simply has favoured curtailing the yatra duration. "When reminded that over two lakh yatris cannot make it to the holy cave within 15 days after the Government, on the basis of the recommendations of Nitish Sen Gupta commission, has announced that not more than 3,000 to 5,000 pilgrims will be allowed to proceed to the cave per day Bhat said "this point needs to be explained to Gilani."
In reply to another question the Hurriyat Confere-nce leader said that the current turmoil in Kashmir is not the outcome of peoples anger against unemployment and poverty but the result of their annoyance against delay in the settlement of the Kashmir issue. In support of his contention he said that even while raising slogans against human rights violations the protesters have been raising louder pro-azadi slogans.
He said the anger against injustices, alienation, deprivation would end once India and Pakistan start sustained dialogue on the settlement of the Kashmir issue. When reminded that Delhi had taken the initiative on resuming dialogue with Islamabad there was no need for kicking up violence in Kashmir Bhat said "I do appreciate India for having taken a bold step by resuming dialogue with P:akistan but what is the purpose of the dialogue when Delhi has been insisting on a discussion on terrorism, security and peace." He said let the two sides start a serious dialogue on Kashmir and once it was done turmoil in Kashmir may take the back seat .
Bhat hastened to add that once the India-Pakistan dialogue on the Kashmir issue progressed there was need for involving"us" in the parleys on the plea that "we are a party to the dispute and a "solution hammered out during triangular talks alone could be durable. "Asked whether those people or agencies that were behind the current turmolil in Kashmir wanted to either sabotage the Indo-Pak dialogue or force Delhi to negotiate on Kashmir Bhat said "neither of the two is correct."He said the "history of post-partition Kashmir is buried under mystery and once this mystery was resolved through the settlement of the dispute it would facilitate restoration of peace and normalcy in the entire south Asian region.
