'Emissaries of peace' visit tense Sopore, oversee yatra arrangements | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 01: While voices emerged from the country to act tough on anti-national elements and rioters in Kashmir, the Omar-led coalition government opted to send its 'emissaries of peace' to restore normalcy in the violence-hit Sopore and ensure incident-free Amarnath yatra. The peace emmisaries included some cabinet ministers, prominent citizens and local cadres of NC and Congress."Some are on an errand, negotiating peace in Sopore, while some are busy in ensuring the smooth conduct of the Amarnath pilgrimage," a top government officer said. He said in the violence-hit Sopore, which was under curfew, some ministers, besides NC and Congress cadres, had been camping to interact with the agitated people and bring down tempers. Finance minister A R Rather was assigned the job of overseeing the yatra arrangements and ensure that there was no compromise with security. He was camping in Jammu. Rather said he was asked to stay in the winter capital to ensure that all arrangements were in place and that none of the pilgrims faced any problem. Senior cabinet minister Qamar Ali Akhoon was kept on move on the Jammu-Srinagar highway to ensure smooth passage of the pilgrims and supply of essential commodities to the valley. Tal Mohiuddin, another senior minister, was tasked to shuttle between Baramulla and Sopore and meet prominent citizens of the areas.Mohiudin today met several people of the troubled areas and requested them to maintain peace which was must for the overall development of Kashmir. Apart from them, the cadres of NC and Congress were also on the job, spreading message of peace, the officer added.Sakina Itoo was camping in south Kashmir and meeting a cross-section of people to restore normalcy in the area.Deputy chief minister Tara Chand was at Pehalgam to ensure that there was no problem to Amarnath pilgrims. |
