No water in Bakerwala Gali since 1947 | | | PHE Poonch fails to quench thirst of residents since 1947
Early Times Report
Rajouri, July 1, 2010
Depending upon 70 houses belonging to Gujjar and Bakerwal community, Bakerwala Gali in Khanetar area of Poonch have been given a water tank first time after independence of India in 1947, however the residents are still without water due to defunct distribution system of Public Health Engineering Department Poonch. Ferrying water on the head from 4 kilometer of distance on daily basis had resulted in loosing of the hairs of head to many women of the village.
Though state government is claiming to have provided basic amenities to the common masses in far-flung areas, 70 families of Gujjar and Bakerwal living in Bakerwal Gali in Poonch district are suffering a lot due to non availability of water in the area. “We have no water to drink in the area and we are suffering due to non availability of water for the last more than 6 decades”, Choudhary Munwar Din of the village said adding “We had get Independence from Britishers in 1947 but the Independence has no meaning for us as we are still facing acute problems of water-the basic facility to survive”. He added that though local MLA Ajaz Jan is striving hard for getting them water, PHE department failed to quench their thirst.
The residents ferry water from lower Khanetar area which is about 3-4 kilometer away from Bakerwala Gali. Women are mostly transporting this water on their head daily to the village while men used to arrange money for bread and butter.
It is surprising that maximum women in this village have loose hair on head by the continuous stress of transportation of water on the hairs. “This is justice with us that we have even lost our hair on head by ferrying water from 4 kilometers and government is watching the episode like mute spectator”, a lady Shamima Begum of the village said.
Sources said that the department had constructed a Water Tank in the area to supply water. This was first initiative of the government after Independence of India to provide such a basic facility to Bakerwala Gali residents but the residents are still suffering without water. They said that the department is not distributing water from this tank due to reason better known to the authorities.
Member Legislative Assembly of the area Ajaz Ahmed Jan when contacted admitted that the village is suffering a lot due to non availability of water. He said that he had got a water tank constructed for the people and even managed to supply water upto the Tank, the residents are not being supplied water from the Tank. “I have already discussed the matter with the authorities and they had assured proper action and if there will be more delay, he will register protest before PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din”, Ajaz Jan said adding that there is perhaps shortage of staff in the department and they should immediately depute people in this area to provide water supply on priority basis.
MLA also said that the ladies of the area have lost their head hairs due daily supplying of water from lower Khanetar. He said that this is injustice with the people and the department must act to provide this facility to the people.
Executive Engineer PHE Poonch, Choudhary Abdul Lateef when contacted expressed his ignorance saying “I am new to this area because I have joined few months later but I am accessing situation in all the areas will try to make functional all the defunct schemes”.
