Excise Commissioner visits Leh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT LEH, July 8: Excise Commissioner, Pradeep Gupta inspected toll posts in Leh and reviewed the revenue collection. The Excise Commissioner is on 3-day tour of the mountainous district. Gupta visited Toll Post and Commercial taxes Check Post at Upshi 50 km away from Leh accompanied by Excise and Taxation Officer, Leh. The new Toll Post at Upshi has been constructed at a cost of Rs 40 lakh and has been established to collect toll on vehicular traffic plying on the Leh-Manali road. There has been steady increase in the revenue earned at the toll post from Rs 82 lakh in the year 2005-06 to Rs 152 lakh in the year 2009-2010. During the current year ending June, 2010, revenue of Rs 14 lakh has already been collected at the toll post notwithstanding the delayed reopening of the road due to the inclement weather. Necessary equipments have been installed at the toll post for computerized weighing of vehicles. Gupta gave on the spot instructions that henceforth only computerized weighing slips should be issued to the drivers. He exhorted upon the toll post staff to remain vigilant and ensure that there is no evasion of toll. He informed that there has been substantial increase in recovery of excise revenue in the excise range Leh-Kargil from about 68 lakh in the year 2005-06 to Rs 124 lakh in the year 2009-2010. In the current year ending June, 2010, the department has already collected excise revenue of about Rs. 12 lakh.
