7/8/2010 11:45:23 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, July 8: Expressing his serious concern over the prevailing situation in Kashmir, CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami has asked all political parties in the state to rise above their party interests and contribute to minimize peoples' sufferings and uncertainty. Tarigami has termed army's deployment unwarranted and lamented curbs on media.
In a statement issued here today, Tarigami termed seeking army's role in the situation as unwarranted and uncalled for. He said that it is unproductive to deploy army, even what is being claimed by the government as "deterrent effect". "The decision to use army in the current situation doesn't go in sync with the demands on the ground," he observed. Stressing that government of India should not handle the current situation causally as the same needs a bold political initiative including a serious dialogue with all shades of political opinion in the state, he said. "Government of India must come out of deep slumber and realize that the discontentment among the youth of Kashmir needs to be reasonably analyzed and addressed," he maintained. Criticizing the curbs on media, the State Committee of the CPI (M) stressed on the state government to allow media persons to discharge their professional duties.
Stressing upon the political parties and the civil society not to indulge in blame game, Tarigami observed that it will further vitiate the atmosphere. "At this critical time when our people are suffering, political parties are expected to rise above party interests and show magnanimity," Tarigami said. CPI (M) State Secretary condemned the indiscriminate arrests and urged upon the government not to harass people in the name of maintaining law and order.
He also expressed anguish over reports of shortage of essential commodities in curfew bound and far flung areas of the valley especially shortage of medicines and other supplies in the hospitals. He urged the government to ensure that people and patients don't suffer for want of food and medicine. Tarigami appealed the people not to hinder the movement of ambulances and hospital staff.
Urging the government to look into the reports alleging harassment of doctors and officials connected with essential services, he asked the authorities to refrain from using harsh measures which hinder the free movement of doctors and para medical staff.
