Can Govt afford to relax curfew in next 3 days?
7/8/2010 11:53:49 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 8: The valley people, it seems, may have to remain indoors for the next three days as well as Hurriyat Conference has effected some changes in its programme publicized earlier. The separatist conglomerate has now urged the people to assemble in Hazratbal shrine on Saturday night to observe Shab-e-Mairaj.
Critical of the government for `sabotaging' its 48 hour road show by imposing curfew, the Hurriyat has told the people to come out on the roads on Friday if curfew is relaxed. "If no relaxation is given, then the people must rush to Hazratbal shrine on Saturday night", a spokesman of the conglomerate said.
Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief, Aasiya Andrabi has supported the amended Hurriyat programme. She urged the people not to celebrate Shab-e-Mairaj with traditional fervor. "Instead, let all of us hold congregational prayers with humility on the blessed night", she said.
Shab-e-Mairaj is celebrated to commemorate the historic journey of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Al Aqsa mosque during the night of Rajab 27.
The Hurriyat programme, therefore, makes it very difficult for the government to relax restrictions before Monday. Lakhs of people throng the Hazratbal shrine on the occasion of Shab-e-Mairaj. People in large numbers will visit the shrine on Saturday night and Sunday.
Hurriyat leaders will try their best to reach the shrine to avail the ‘opportunity’. And if it happens, a huge procession is inevitable. The people are angry and the Hurriyat leaders know it.
This time the government is at a disadvantage. The killings and restrictions have added to peoples' anger. The Hurriyat leaders seem prepared for a prolonged confrontation. They have appealed to the people to form relief committees to help the needy during curfew days. The people have also been told to ensure that the minority committee gets ration, vegetables and medicines.
The ball, therefore, is in the court of the government. Can government afford to impose restrictions on an important Muslim festival? But can it afford to relax restrictions in the next three days?
