Transport Nagar-a victim of official apathy
JDA, JMC shift blame on each other
7/9/2010 11:11:40 PM
early times report
JAMMU, July 9: Transport Nagar near Narwal Mandi in Jammu meant for providing repairing facilities for cargo vehicles in Jammu is in shambles and presented a deserted look because of negligent and dilly delaying tactics of the concerned authorities. In 1986, state government had provided land to the shopkeepers involved in transport sector at this place and the area was made operational in 1994.
This area is under Jammu Development Authority (JDA) but prominent shopkeepers of the area alleged that the JDA was doing nothing for the welfare of the area.
For providing better sanitation facilities, the area was handed over to Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) some one year back, shopkeepers termed it as a futile exercise as the condition remained the same.
Lack of sanitation facilities is a big problem being faced by the workers and owners of the shops of the area. There are only 3 toilets being built by Sulabh International, for such a large number for working force.
There is also no dispensary available in the area. Many workers got injured seriously while working on machines.
Shopkeepers also alleged that there is also no parking facility for the trucks and other big vehicles that visit here for loading goods.
When contacted to the Vice Chairman JDA Gulzar Ahmed Qureshi for his version, he said ``we have started the work on roads, also we have going to formulate a full fledged plan for the renovation of the area and its infrastructural facilities''. He also said `` the responsibility of the sanitation work was with Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), we were only dealing with maintenance of the area''.
Commissioner JMC Mubarak Singh could not be contacted for his comment despite repeated attempts.
But this area presents a look of neglected area and is a center of pollution; there are many holes and cracks in the roads of the area at different spots. Because of this dilapidated condition of the roads, the customers as well as the shopkeepers are facing multiple problems.
The water supply is erratic and power department is in deep slumber. Only few shops have water and electricity connection.
The area is famous for repairing different types of vehicles, spare parts, also loading-unloading of goods besides other work related to the transport sector.
