Fancy's death haunts police men | Cops asked to vacate rented accommodation | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 9: The death of a 25-year-old girl from Sidiqabad, Batmaloo is likely to cost police dearly even if no action is taken against the erring policeman who fired the fatal shot. The men in uniform have been asked to vacate their rented accommodation immediately. The girl, Fancy Khan lived in an area which falls in the close vicinity of Police Control Room, District police Lines and the Armed Police Headquarters. A number of police men live in rented houses in the locality which was stormed by the police a few days ago. Soon after performing the last rites of the deceased, the people convened a meeting and decided not to rent out their accommodation to the men in uniform. Hundreds of police men vacated their rented accommodation on the day Fancy fell to a bullet. A few families have been told to stay back till curfew is lifted. The meeting also urged the people to refrain from renting their houses to police men in future as well. The decision will subject the police men who come from across the state to inconvenience. A constable from Kupwara who had been living in the area with his family for the past two years has been told to look for accommodation elsewhere. He happened to be a regular visitor to the local mosque and also led prayers in absence of the Imam. Notwithstanding this, he has been told to vacate. For the first time in the past two decades, the people have come out openly against the police men. It did not happen at a time when the special operations group (SOG) wreaked havoc across Kashmir. Muhammad Ishaq who attended the above mentioned meeting told Early Times that the people were angry. "At least five persons have seen the erring police man fire the shot that killed fancy. But the local SHO says he does not know who fired the fatal shot", he said. The people want justice. The killing of the girl, according to them, cannot be justified by any means. "The boycott shall continue till the culprits is arrested and put on trial", Ishaq made clear. The attitude of the people must have rung alarm bells in the police headquarters. The authorities have been desperately trying to improve the image of the police force. Police-public meetings have been held almost in every major town of the Valley. The DGP is taking keen interest in such meetings.
