Centre may not support Omar indefinitely | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 10: Will Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah's led Government survive in the wake of the current turmoil in the Kashmir valley ?This is a million dollar question that awaits a definite answer.Yes,Omar survived the crisis which was the result of the two-month long agitation over the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian last year. But if one compares the agitation over the Shopian incident with the one that has destabilised peace in Kashmir at present one will find that the current turmoil has assumed alarming dimensions giving painful aches to the Chief Minister.Omar Abdullah is under pressure from various quarters either to quit or to accept defeat. But the young Chief Minister is not willing to "run away" from the responsibility that has been placed on his fragile shoulders. He has stated that even though the recent developments have dented his credibility and that of his Government he would not run away as he was not weak. This indicates that Omar Abdullah is determined to fight his political detractors whom he holds responsible for inciting people to indulge in violence. Well if Omar Abdullah has survived so far it has been the result of continued support Delhi has been providing to him.But how long the Congress led UPA Government can afford to keep the Omar led Government on life support ?Definitely not for a long time. The centre would have intervened politically for either finding a suitable replacement to Omar Abdullah or for altering the current political arrangement but the Government of India preferred patience because any hasty step could further complicate the situation in Kashmir. Besides this the centre was not quite sure whether change in the guard would restore peace and hence it opted for dither because a section in the Congress high command believes that replacing Omar by another political leader or imposing Governor's rule could encourage the separatists to the extent that they may start believing that they have the power to break Governments. What seems to have placed Omar Abdullah on a rickety wicket is his failure to secure support of major opposition parties like the PDP,the BJP and the Panthers Party in finding a solution to the current crisis at the All Party meeting to be held in Srinagar on Monday. The PDP,the BJP and the Panthers Party have turned down the invitation from the Government to the meet on the plea that the Chief Minister had neither bothered to take them into confidence nor listened to their suggestions during the last one month. This indicates that Omar Abdullah, during the last 18 months, had sidelined senior political leaders, including those belonging not only to the opposition groups but to the National Conference and the Congress.Possibly this is one of the reasons that has created a situation in which Omar Abdullah is seen fighting war against the separatists and against those indulging in stone pelting single handedly. The Chief Minister is not wrong when he said that the current turmoil is the outcome of the old malady. He is right when he said that people have been motivated to seek resolution of the Kashmir issue because during the last one year the groups of people, protesting against human rights violations, raised slogans demanding "azadi"Not a single slogan demanding jobs, water, electricity, roads and subsidies was heard from any corner of Kashmir.Hence it will not be appropriate to hold Omar Abdullah responsible for the current turmoil.yes,he can be blamed for having smoothened the road to turmoil. One thing is certain. The centre will continue to support him but this support may not be given if the situation in Kashmir did not improve within next 10 to 15 days.If the turmoil showed no signs of ending the centre may opt for some drastic political measure that could restore peace to Kashmir.
