Mahbooba has to be with Omar for peace!
ALL PARTY MEET
7/12/2010 1:15:46 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 11: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mahbooba Mufti's reluctance to attend all party meeting on July 12 has evoked reactions ranging from critical to scornful. Her reluctance evoked a reaction from the Chief Minister as well. He told her to be part of the solution by ensuring her participation in the meeting. According to Omar, She will figure amongst the `mischief mongers' by staying away from the `important meeting'. To put it in George Bush's words, Mahbooba has to be with Omar for restoration of peace. The choice is limited!
Mufti responded by addressing a press conference at her residence. "Had Omar taken note of my letter, the situation would have been different today", she said. Pertinent to mention, Mahbooba wrote a letter to Omar Abdullah two months ago, seeking an all party meeting to discuss issues of ` vital importance'. Omar rejected the offer and urged her to refrain from criticizing his government for the sake of it.
Earlier Mahbooba received a call from Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. The Prime Minister urged her to attend the meeting. However, she expressed her inability to participate in the meeting scheduled for July 12. Instead, she requested the Prime Minister to take tangible measures for diffusing the tense situation in Kashmir. The measures suggested by Mahbooba include lifting restrictions on the media, withdrawal of army deployed to maintain law and order in the city and an end to crackdown on political activists.
Mahbooba's seemingly `pro-people' stand has found a few takers in Srinagar. The people, by and large, criticized her for pursuing what they called `running with the hare and hunting with the hound policy. "Killing did not stop in Kashmir when her party was at the helm of affairs. Why did not her party take measures for repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)? While her father chaired the unified headquarter meetings, she was seen shedding crocodile tears for slain militants", said Ali Muhammad, a government teacher.
An aggrieved father, whose daughter got killed a few days ago, said the PDP and National Conference (NC) talk about human rights when they are out of power. "Once they occupy the seat of power they become perpetrators", he said.
He is not interested in the all party meet. "Will it make any difference to me? Will Mahbooba's participation bring the much needed solace to victims like me? And, what can she do if she attends the meet? Mahbooba and Omar Abdullah are two faces of the same coin", he said.
