Jammu suffers losses as Valley simmers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 12: THE Kashmir turmoil has effected the tourism influx in Jammu too. Being a hub of tourism, large number of people in state are dependent upon the tourist season to earn livelihood for the year in two or three months. Unfortunately, this year the unrest in Valley before the beginning the annual Amarnath pilgrimage followed by imposition of curfew across the Valley, the tourists and pilgrims either cancelled their advance bookings or redirected their destination of journey to other states. Delinking of road and rail track due to heavy rains in Punjab and Haryana also added to the woes of tourists and pilgrims. Director Tourism, S M Sahni while talking Early Times informed that there has been effect on tourism in Valley due to prevailing tension which has in turn its repercussions in Jammu also. He said that Shri Amarnath and Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is running smoothly. He added that tourist spots in Jammu like Patnitop are witnessing tourist flow of routine. He was of view that bookings for Kashmir have been cancelled but if dust of tension settles within a day or two, normal tourist influx could be expected . However, Raghunath Bazar Businessmen Association, President, Surinder Mahajan was of view that this year the record was to set for highest number of tourists as well as pilgrims but due to unrest in Valley all hopes were shattered. As no one wants to be the part of tension and turmoil so tourists in large number cancelled their bookings, which has made trader community to suffer a lot, he said and added that even in Kashmir, traders would realise it after they calculate the figures because if a tourist or pilgrim spends Rs 100 in Jammu, prefers to spend Rs 200 in Valley. "We are left still with a month and a half of season and if situation normalizes in Valley, influx of tourists and pilgrims cannot be ruled" he said and added that people of Kashmir should understand the economic problem of the state. Chairman Special Tourist Taxi Association, Inderjeet Sharma said that almost all the advance booking by the tourists have been cancelled. He said that taxi operators are rendered task free as tourists for Kashmir is far away even for local areas are not seen for the last ten days. Every year at the time of Amarnath pilgrimage some elements are hell bent to come out to create turmoil to them both state and central government are giving liberty which cause problem to tourists, pilgrims and taxi operators, he said, adding taxi operators have to earn in two months for complete year. He said during normal situation people of Kashmir are being benefited directly by trade and during turmoil government is out there to give them compensation and other packages to which Jammu people are being ignored for the last twenty years. Similar was opined by the head of hoteliers' association, dhabawalas union, autorickshaw associations and many others of related to tourism and pilgrimage.
