12 top LeT, HM ultras killed in 7 months | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 12: Twelve top terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) outfits have been killed by security forces in Kishtwar district since December last year. Yesterday, LeT top terrorist Imtiaz Ahmed Rather of Koti Basti was shot dead by army in a gunbattle in Keshwan forests of Kishtwar. He was a close associate of LeT commander Habibullah Gujjar alias Salman.A defence spokesman said Imitiaz was involved in several incidents of extortion and harassment of locals, besides attacks on security forces. The LeT outfit had suffered a major jolt as the killing came within 48 hours of the busting of a Lashkar hideout in Singpore area of Kishtwar, he added.A large quantity of explosives, eatables and items of daily use were recovered from the hideout. The spokesman said the killing of Imitiaz, who was quite notorious in Keshwan area, would bring much needed respite to locals. Since December 2009, army had systematically neutralized 12 top cadres of the LeT and in Kishtwar, he added. He said with the elimination of these militants, several Kishtwar areas had become safer for the locals to live in. With the killing of Imtiaz and marginalization of LeT in Kishtwar, and the recent operational successes of security forces had reaffirmed that the district was on the path of returning to peace, he added. The spokesman said the surviving cadres had been kept on the move without any respite as security forces were constantly on the look out for them. There had been disarray and chaos among militants because of the increased and relentless pressure by security forces on them, he added. He said the militants, who were faced with shortage of arms and ammunition, also lacked local support.
