PDP too wants 'senior Abdullah' to take over….?
7/12/2010 11:09:22 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 12: When PDP president Mehbooba Mufti asked for 'bigger initiatives' from Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to douse Kashmir flames, it was certainly not confined to the rhetorical demands her party has been voicing to give relief to the common masses. What is it that PDP wants amid its severe criticism and anger pointed towards Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alone ?
During the last two weeks of war of nerves both the parties are indulged in, it has become amply clear that it is primarily Omar Abdullah who has been in the centre stage of controversies in so far as the PDP's anger and resentment is concerned. Be it the matters of governance, his style of working or lately his 'inability' to handle the situation in a 'desired' manner, PDP has all through tottered its guns towards Omar and his chair.
At no point of time since fresh trouble erupted in Kashmir, PDP has ever named any other leader, not even Dr Farooq Abdullah, the Patron of the ruling National Conference. Not to speak of the Congress or any of its cabinet ministers or the senior leaders of the ally, not within the government. For PDP, the Congress or its stalwarts are as irrelevant as if non existent in terms of their cumulative role in the coalition government. Since they are a major ally of the coalition, they should have been equally held responsible for the matters of omission and commission in the continuous tirade of PDP against the government.
Insiders within both the rival parties of Kashmir attribute it simply to PDP leadership's discomfort with Omar Abdullah in chair. Two young leaders Mehbooba as well as Omar have never agreed to each other on any issue related to Kashmir . Both have been critical about policies of respective parties during respective periods of governance. The accusations and counter accusations sometimes go to the extent of sour exchange of phrases on personal front, which media has been playing up rightly or wrongly.
At this point of time, now when the venom is continually spewed against Omar by PDP what does it actually want ? A common perception may well be to the extent of opposition wanting dismissal of the government…., imposition of Governor's rule or at the most replacement of NC by Congress at the steering seat. But PDP has neither aired any such demand nor actually expects any such step from Centre in present circumstances.
If some reliable sources within the PDP are to be believed, the party leadership at this juncture when Centre appears to be in no mood to make 'huge changes' , at least wants the replacements on the hot chair from within the ruling party. Sources also confirm that there has been some kind of unanimity in threadbare discussions within PDP leaders that senior Abdullah can make 'better choice' in place of Omar when it comes to handling things like present situation. "He is experienced……..can relate to Kashmiri masses and masses can relate to him on sensitive matters", said a senior PDP leader. Moreover Farooq Abdullah is acceptable to leaders of his party and would never allow 'political novices' to handle the sensitive matters , the PDP leader added, elaborating much harm has been done to Omar by such people who have 'accidentally' come into politics.
Even as father Farooq Abdullah has set aside the speculations of 'swapping hot seat' with son Omar Abdullah, amid unabated criticism of PDP, such whimpers in politics circles are far from being over. It remains to be seen what PDP has been looking for will come true or the anger against Omar will pacify by some 'miraculous' political step?
