Meagre wages under MGNREGA a major impediment in its success | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 13: The Government of India had started the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) few years back for improving the purchasing power of rural poor and provide them minimum employment so as to make them able to improve their situation a bit. However, in J&K the scheme started April last year. The scheme basically meant for primarily semi or un-skilled work to people living in rural India, whether or not they are below the poverty line. But there are many flaws in the implementation of MGNREGA allegedly at the hands of the government officials responsible for implementing the scheme. Under this scheme, the government provides Rs 110 per day for 100 days of the year for the development works in villages. But here, daily wagers in private sector get Rs 150-200 per day, which is more than the wages given under the scheme. When this correspondent conducted a brief survey to take stock of the implementation of the MGNREGA, many people specially the labour class said that the wages under MGNREGA are very low as compared to the market, so they prefer working in market instead of working in MGNREGA projects. Sarpanch of lower Sunjwan, Jammu said that when government started this scheme and organised the camp for training to the Sarpanch or panch and after that they had gone to the every nook and corner to aware the people but response was poor. He further said that the main problem is of the less daily wages. Another Sarpanch of Jallo Chak, Jammu , Ajmer Singh said ``we had made job cards of some of the people but they did not work there because these people had said wages were insufficient''.
