AJHLA, JPVM demand early appointment of VC CU
7/13/2010 10:50:13 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July13: All Jammu Hotels and Lodges Association (AJHLA) and Jammu Paryatan Vikas Mandal (JPVM) have expressed serious concern over inordinate delay in appointing the Vice Chancellor for the proposed Central University (CU) of Jammu.
In a joint meeting of the two organisations held here today under the Chairmanship of Inderjeet Khajuria, the members said that unrest and resentment is brewing in academic circles of Jammu due to this delay.
The hoteliers association and representatives of other trade organizations connected with tourism and pilgrimage observed that any disturbance in Jammu at this stage when Shri Amarnath Yatra is going on smoothly, with several lakhs of pilgrims poised for undertaking the yatra, the present unrest among students and academic circles in Jammu has the potential to snowball into an agitation, leading to giving calls for bandhs and strikes, which will adversely affect the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra.
It appealed the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development and the President of India to step in to defuse the simmering discontent and resentment in Jammu over non taking of steps to make Jammu Central University functional at the earliest.
Expressing apprehensions of attempts from certain quarters inimical to Jammu's regional aspirations and interests, the meeting read in it a conspiracy to finally shelve opening of Central University in Jammu or at least delaying and deferring the establishment of the same. It observed that while Central University Kashmir has since become functional and has run its two sessions, for the CU Jammu even Vice Chancellor has not been appointed.Conveying their solidarity and support to the students and academicians, who are opposing the appointment of Amitabh Mattoo as Vice Chancellor of Jammu Central University, the tourist related trade organizations supported the demand for a local academician and scholar as the Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu. It observed that Mattoo's leanings towards the separatists and Kashmiri militants are further exposed by his latest article published in some newspapers about Kashmir situation.
The nationalists and patriotic people of Jammu are genuinely opposed to the appointment of a person with established pro-separatist and pro-militants inclination as Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu.
Criticising the Kashmir centric approach of the ruling dispensation in the state and in the country, it observed that originally a Central University was mooted for Jammu and IIM for Kashmir.
But these authorities bungled and ultimately created a situation where IIM had to be dropped and two Central Universities were decided to be set up one each for Jammu and Kashmir. But there appears to be a conspiracy to shelve the Central University for Jammu under one pretext or the other.
While appreciating the support extended by the civil society and enlightened sections of people in Jammu to the demand for a local Vice Chancellor for CU Jammu, the meeting appealed to all the MPs, legislators from Jammu belonging to all the parties as well as all the political and social organizations and their Jammu based leaders to collectively take up the matter with the concerned authorities and press for early appointment of a local person as VC of CU Jammu, as a first step to make the University functional.
