Prime Minister’s authority eroding: BJP | | | AGENCIES New Delhi, July 13: BJP has asked the Centre to discard the policy of experimentation and knee-jerk reactions on the issue of Kashmir. The situation demanded formulation of a clear approach to tackle growing lawlessness in the state, whereby the separatist elements and the mischief-makers should be dealt with sternly. The gains secured by security forces should not be allowed to be frittered away by ham-handed approach of the central and the state administrations. BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad deplored that the moral authority of the Central Government, including that of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has been so badly eroded and tarnished that his invitation for talks and normalization is being openly spurned. He said that it was also disturbing that today it was the separatists and their mentors, who were holding the state and the central governments at ransom. The writ of the state administration appears to have shrunk to an extent that it is seen as cornered, helpless and totally bereft of both political and administrative will to even attempt to retrieve the situation. Accusing the Congress-National Conference Government in the State of playing into the hands of separatists and mischievous elements, Prasad said it failed to build upon the critical successes achieved by the security forces over the years and instill a sense of confidence among the common people. "The sacrifices and the operational advantages secured by the security forces have been allowed to be frittered away by ham-handed approach of the State administration," Prasad said. Taking serious note of the Army Chief's statement to the effect that civil administration in the state has failed to capitalize on the opportunities created by the security agencies, the BJP leader said that it is a "damning indictment not only of the State Government but also of the UPA Government at the Centre." Drawing parallels between the UPA Government and the NDA regime, he said when NDA was in power at the Centre, the PDP was at the helm of affairs in the state. Yet, consistent and conscious efforts were made both at policy and development level to ensure that mischievous elements and India-baiters were not allowed to have an upper hand. "Such kinds of controversies were not allowed to stall the entire administrative apparatus as it is happening today. The separatist elements and mischief mongers were kept at bay and were not allowed dictating the political and development agenda," stated the BJP leader. The lack of policy in Kashmir was symptomatic of a total sense of atrophy, cluttered thinking and drift evident in the UPA Government at the Centre on all critical aspects -- be it economy, prices, security, foreign policy, Bhopal gas tragedy and others.
