Sports present grim picture in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 13: Sports and related activities are dying a slow death in the state due to lack of required facilities and infrastructure. Courtesy apathy from the side of those sitting at the helm of the affairs. All the claims and assurances of the sports authorities are proving hollow as far as condition of the sports and sports persons in the state is concerned. This is particularly true in case of Dogra Ground in Shastri Nagar in the Jammu, where the State Sports Council had to construct Basketball ground and walking track. Without taking all the stake holders into confidence, the construction work was abandoned some time ago after resistance from the locals and political interference. Almost 20-22 lakhs has been spent on the said ground so far. Presently, no sports activity was going on in the ground. Dogra ground is in dilapidated condition now as the construction of the courtyard started almost a year ago but the construction of basketball court was not completed. The ground has approximate length of 100 metres and width of 50 metres. One of the coaches, associated with the State Sports Council, on the condition of anonymity, said that the Council has failed to fulfill the demands of the players regarding infrastructure and facilities. The first and foremost point of serious concern for the players is the affairs, activities and the finance of the State Sports Council that are being run and conducted by Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) but not by the working committee of the State Sports Council, which is the only authorized body to run the day to day affairs of the council. He further said that there was no dearth of talent in the ur State but the Government was not improving the facilities and infrastructure to extract maximum out put from the existing talent.
