Taxi operators breaching security, operating illegal taxi stand opposite DGP residence Traffic Police expresses helplessness
7/13/2010 11:06:31 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 13: While Security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir is cause of worry for the police, but it is strange to note that area near the official residence of Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda has been turned into a taxi stand by the tour operators.
Seems funny, but it's true, putting the security norms to the wind, some of the operators during early morning hours assemble outside the house of the DGP near Bikram Chowk and take the passengers for their onward journey.
As the most of the Srinagar bound passengers are from the other states and visit the state by train, these taxi operators tries to catch the passengers coming from railway station by mini buses midway.
In the morning hours, one could easily witness the taxi operators intercepting the mini buses and shouting to attract the passengers.
"At a time when the militants are trying hard to target soft target, then how the policemen have allowed these operators to run their operations close to their chief's official residence", said a source.
It is pertinent to mention here that DGP is obviously on the hit list of the subversive elements and they might use this situation to carry out their nefarious designs in the guise of passengers or could also take the benefit of rush of Srinagar bound passengers, to create panic.
"It's a big security challenge as Khoda often visit the place and even during these times, no action is taken against the private taxi operators", said a police official.
It is pertinent to mention here that it is also illegal on part of the taxi operators to use the place for lifting passengers. "They cannot use it as the sumo stand; transport department has specified certain areas for the same. Police should take action", said another senior official preferring anonymity.
However none of the official from the transport department was available for the comment on this crucial matter.
When contacted SP Traffic, Jammu Zahid Manhas admitted that it is illegal on the part of taxi operators from shifting their base here and expressed helplessness on his part as he said there was dearth of traffic police personnel and it is hard to check the traffic nuisance scattered across the city.
Meanwhile, the Gandhi Nagar Police has also failed to take cognizance of this matter. Sources disclosed that police is allowing those taxi operators after charging their share.
