Man posing as advisor to PM arrested | Causes loss to state exchequer | | SUMIT SHARMA & KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 13: A person posing as an advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was today arrested in Katra, the base camp of the Vaishno Devi shrine. According to sources, the imposter, who has been arrested was 'ironically' identified as Manmohan Singh, a resident of Fateh Nagar locality in New Delhi adding that he misused the name of Prime Minister's Office to avail special privileges being accorded to VVIPs. "He impersonated as an advisor to the prime minister and made the authorities believe so. But the police felt suspicious and checked up with Delhi Police and the Prime Minister's Office to know the truth," sources said. "He along with his niece identified as Baljeet Kour, a Sadhu and two drivers entered state from Lakhanpur yesterday. His vehicle was fitted with beacon light, stickers of Press on windshield, Government of India on registration plate and Indian tricolor on a flag rod. A party from Punjab police was escorting his cavalcade and later was joined by Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel at Kathua," said sources, adding When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua, Garib Dass said, "We received a message from Police Control Room Jammu regarding arrival of a VVIP at Lakahnapur on Sunday. Accordingly we provided an escort vehicle as per norms." The impersonator drove his vehicle straightway to his son-in-law Shamsher Singh's residence at sector -11, Nanak Nagar. Sources said that they arrived Jammu in three vehicles viz one blue colour Skoda car (DL-AN-TC 126), an Ambassador car (DL-4C-AV 3277) and an escort Police Gypsy (DL-1ZA 8655) adding that he reached there at around 7:30 pm last night and stayed for one and a half hours there. "The impersonator along with his relatives left for Katra at around 9:00 pm," said sources, adding "On getting the information that an 'advisor' to Prime Minister is arriving in the area, huge deployment of police was made. Besides, Jammu Municipal Corporation had also pressed into service its manpower and conducted a special sanitation drive to clean the area." Manamohan performed darshan at holy shrine early this morning and returned to base camp where he along with other persons were arrested and taken into custody by the Police," maintained sources. He was arrested when Tehsildar Katra, who was accompanying him got suspicious of his activities and informed the police, sources said, adding "Police verified the credentials of the person from the PMO and it turned out that he was an imposter." Unconfirmed reports said, "He had worked with the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh when he (PM) was Finance Minister." Sources said that before entering Jammu and Kashmir he visited Chandigarh city and paid obeisance at Golden Temple in Amritsar. This act has given huge loss to government exchequer. A case of fraud under section 419, 420, 170 RPC was registered in Police Station Katra. Police however, have started an investigation into the matter. Sources said that he was bailed out later in the evening. Meanwhile The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) today clarified that a person named Manmohan Singh, who had been arrested by the police in Katra in Jammu and Kashmir for posing as a political adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had no official or unofficial link with the Prime Minister or his office. Referring to media reports about the arrest of the man, who was provided special facilities by the authorities for visiting the Vaishnodevi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, the PMO said that, in the last few years, there had been reports of this person using the name of the Prime Minister and trying to create an impression that he is close to the Prime Minister. "Whenever such claims came to our notice, these were refuted...All public functionaries should exercise necessary caution when entertaining any claims made by this person," the PMO statement added.The reports said the imposter had aroused the suspicions of the polce in Jammu and Kashmir. They found he was an imposter after they cross-checked with the PMO.
