EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 16: The traffic scenario in the winter capital of the state having one of the largest traffic densities in the world is at the mercy of the God as far as management of passenger vehicles and parking is concerned.
Decades old General Bus Stand in Jammu is proving insufficient in coping up the heavy rush of hundreds of buses. Private and Government buses of the state and otherstates are supposed to ply from the General Bus Stand.
As per the State Motor Vehicle Act, the General Bus Stand was primarily made for buses of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) and also of RTC of the other states. But due to deficiency of space in the Bus Stand, many Government buses are made to ply from the B C Road, outside of the Bus Stand.
Despite the long demand of transporters to build a fullfledged bus terminal in the outskirts of the city, nothing concrete has been done regard and buses are made to loiterhere and there in search of proper space for parking.
Though idea was mooted to shift the Bus Stand from heart of the city to the peripheral localities but nothing concrete has been happened so far. It seems that Government have shelved the idea to shift the same. When General Bus Stand, Jammu was made traffic density was very low at that time. Since then traffic has beenincreased many fold.
One can have the true picture of the dilapidated condition of the Bus Stand just having a cursory glance.
General Bus stand of Jammu city is a classical example ofthe Government's apathy and fulfilling the requirement of time.
At present General Bus Stand is mostly hovered by private vehicles and government buses mostly found outside the bus stand as a result of which this unregulated mechanism of creates many problems for tourists.
One of the transporter stated that traffic scenario can be improved a lot just by construction of new bus terminal at the out skirts of the city. "We are facing many problems due to irregularity and lack of proper arrangement for platforms of government and private vehicles" said one of the tourists.
When contacted, Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said that condition of the passenger vehicles at General Bus Stand could be improved only after commissioning of new bus terminal near Narwal is made operational. He also said that sufficient space was prescribed in General Bus Stand for RTC and private vehicles.
