Pak army soldier killed, over 6 injured in retaliatory fire by India | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 16: At least one Pak army soldier was killed and over six others were wounded in retaliatory fire by India in Krishna Ghati sub-sector of Mendhar, Poonch, last night.Violating ceasefire, Pak troops had last night resorted to small and medium arms fire, and heavy shelling, on the Line of Control (LoC), targetting Kirpan, Ghora, Kranti and Nangi Tekri forward Indian posts.A total of 50 odd shells fired by Pakistan exploded in noman's land close to the forward posts, official sources said, quoting intelligence inputs. The explosions, which were heard in Poonch town also, rattled window panes of houses in Mendhar and several other Poonch areas, spreading panic. The shells exploded without causing any harm to life and property of the army and border residents, the sources added.India returned the fire. The exchange of fire, which started late last night, continued for over three hours. Sources said in retaliatory action by India, at least one Pak forward post incharge was killed and more than six others were wounded critically. The firing by the Pak troops was totally unprovoked and amounted to ceasefire violation, the sources added. Sources said the firing was aimed at facilitating infiltration by militants and diverting the attention of troops who were engaged in a gunbattle with militants in the nearby Chhajla forests. An alert had been sounded all along the LoC and the International Border (IB) following inputs that militants could make infiltration attempts in the coming days.Police had also alerted their border posts. Sources said border residents had also been asked to exercise vigil and contact security forces in case they sighted suspicious persons in their villages.
