On Day 4 of Mendhar encounter, Maj, two jawans wounded | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 16: On 4th day of the gunbattle between security forces and militants in Chhajla forests of Mendhar, Poonch, a Major and two jawans of 37 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) were late last night wounded. The encounter had started Tuesday last in Mendhar's Beri Rakh forests when militants had ambushed a search party of 37 RR, killing Maj Amit Thenge and wounding six others, including Col Ajay Katoch. After two days of the gunfight, one militant was killed by security forces in Beri Rakh forests in the wee hours of Thursday while the others had broken troops' cordon and taken positions in Chhajla woods, about 1.5 km ahead of Beri Rakh. One militant was shot dead by troops in the Chhajla forests Thursday afternoon. Both the slain militants were suspected to be Pakistanis. The remaining militants, said to be at least two in number, later started firing on the troops from two different directions. Police sources said while an army party was gradually heading towards the militants late last night, they came under heavy fire, resulting in injuries to Maj J S Shekhawat, Naik Narinder Singh and rifleman Bhanu Pratap. They were admitted to army hospital at Rajouri. However, following deterioration in his condition, Narinder was later referred to the command hospital at Udhampur. The intermittent exchange of fire between the holed up militants and troops continued till early this morning, the sources added. Sources said since there was no firing from the side of militants since morning, there was a possibility of their having fled the area. Reinforcements had been rushed to the Chhajla forests and a massive operation launched in search for them. Searches were continuing when reports last came in tonight. Sources said when the intermittent firing between the two sides was on last night, militants perched in other parts of the Mendhar forests too had fired, expressing solidarity with their trapped accomplices. Their this act, however, had no impact on the troops engaged in the encounter as they had not come close to the encounter site, the sources added.
