Humid weather, power cuts compounding miseries of Jammuites | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 17: With hot and humid weather conditions giving no respite to the residents of Jammu, the Power Development Department is adding to the miseries of the common residents by resorting to unscheduled power curtailment during peak hours. The situation in far flung and remote areas of the district and other adjoining districts is worrisome as the unscheduled power cuts have made life miserable for the residents. Add to this the power shortage is giving jitters to the PDD as it has no other option but to resort to curtailment to make up for the burgeoning gap between the demand and the supply. Absence of trained staff and availability of spare transformers have further compounded miseries of the PDD in areas where due to overloading and other technical snags the power lines are getting frequently snapped and repair works are delayed due to these reasons. At times when the region witnesses windstorm and heavy rainfall lash the plain areas the power lines are disconnected automatically for longer durations. Uprooted trees and branches of trees pose another impediment for the employees of the PDD to timely resurrect the power lines. Chief Engineer PDD maintenance wing maintained that during peak hours when the demand increeases the PDD is left with no other option but to resort to curtailment as per the roaster prepared by the department. Meanwhile, several prominent trader organisations have also expressed deep concern over the unscheduled power cuts leading to business losses. Production houses and small scale industries association with business units located in Digiana have also raised their concerns urging the PDD to ensure uninterrupted power supply to them to avoid losses.
