4 more Amarnath pilgrims die, toll reaches 17

SRINAGAR, July 17: Four Amarnath pilgrims and a local PCO owner died since last evening. The pilgrims who died hail from Maharashtra, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Gujarat
With this a total of 17 yatris and a local have died since the commencement of the two-month-long pilgrimage to Amarnath cave shrine since July 1. According to official sources, 73-year-old Nandini Anand, a resident of Maharashtra died due to cardiac arrest at Panjtarni enroute holy cave shrine about 3657 mt above sea level. They said 71-year-old pilgrim from Bangalore, Leeladhar Singh also died after a massive heart attack at Baltal base camp. Prithvi Raj, a 60-year-old resident of Hyderabad, also suffered a heart attack at base camp. He was immediately shifted to base hospital where he died. Shardha Bhai, a 65-year-old resident of Gujarat expired at base camp due to cardiac arrest, they added. The officials said a STD owner 26-year-old Bilal Ahmad died at Baltal base camp.
The cause of his death was being ascertained.
