Centre yet to concede state's demand for more paramilitary forces | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July17: Following reports that the separatists are yet to suspend their plan of inciting people to take to the streets, the state Government has asked the centre to send additional companies of paramilitary forces for dealing with the situation that may register further deterioration. However, the centre is yet to respond. Official sources said that after the centre had sent additional companies of paramilitary forces for deployment on Amarnath yatra duty it had not so far conceded "our demand" for more forces for dealing with the situation. Sources said that the state had, otherwise, sufficient forces but the sense of fatigue that the police and the CRPF men had come under had started enhancing the level of their stress and strain. Sources said that the state Government wanted additional companies of paramilitary forces so that those who have been fighting against unruly mobs indulging in violence and stone pelting since June 11 were able to get respite. A senior police officer posted in Srinagar said "my men have been on duty for more than 20 hours a day and as such it may not be possible for the forces to remain physically fit if they are not allowed to enjoy longer hours of rest. This could be possible only after additional forces were sent to Kashmir so that duties could be done on rotational basis. The officer, basing his report on the intelligence agency inputs, said that there were signs of desperation on the part of the separatists after they found that the Thursday talks between the Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan had ended in a stalemate. He said that these separatists may try to kick up bigger violence so that Delhi was forced to make Indo-Pak dialogue process Kashmir centric. The leaders of the separatist camp have already stated that the Krishna-Qureshi talks failed because of the Kashmir issue which India did not want to be discussed. These separatists believe that unless the two sides take up Kashmir issue for discussion and consequent resolution chances of peace in Kashmir were quite bleak. The state police functionaries are of the opinion that tight security measures needed to be supplemented with some political initiative for countering the propaganda of the separatists and for winning over the support of the people in the valley. They said that if the leaders of the ruling coalition and those belonging to the mainstream political parties remain in self-imposed hibernation the separatists may succeed in enjoying the upper hand. |
