| SPEAK India organizes dharna against loot of Ravi minerals | | |

Kathua 17 July: SPEAK India organized a massive protest demonstration in Shaheed Bhagat Sing Park Kathua under the leadership of its national vice president Suresh Kumar. The purpose was to highlight the long pending genuine demand that illegal extraction of minerals from the Ravi be banned. Organizers submitted a memorandum to this effect to the District Kathua Development Board chairman. Incidentally Minister for Tourism was present in the meeting. Suresh Kumar said that wanton destruction of mineral wealth from the river was conducted by crusher units owned by people not from Kathua but from the adjoining State of Punjab. Their activities were causing big loss to the state and also to the ecology of the area. He said that in this regard SPEAK India had staged dharna in front of Kathua DC's office some days back but after assurance from MLA Kathua, Charanjeet Singh, that necessary action against the smugglers of mineral wealth would be taken to save the Ravi, protest dharna was lifted immediately. But nothing has been done till date to stop wanton exploitation of mineral wealth. He urged the state government through Tourism Minister, Mfr. Jora to direct Kathua administration to impose ban on illegal extraction of minerals from River Ravi. . Rajan Dhiman, Naresh Kumar, Ajay Kumar and others were present in the dharna. |
