'SWD is negligent in granting scholarships to minorities'
7/17/2010 10:01:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 17: National Sikh Front (NSF) Jammu and Kashmir has alleged that state Social Welfare Department (SWD) is adopting dilly dallying tactics in distribution of scholarships to the students belonging to minority communities.
In a letter written to Union Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khursheed, NSF chairman Varinder Jeet Singh said that because of Social Welfare department's carelessness there are around fifty students who are finding it very difficult to get their scholarships.
For the year 2008-09, the students who held professional degrees did receive their scholarships and for the year 2009-2010 they again filled up the forms but their names were put into the fresh candidates list instead of renewal candidates due to the negligence of social welfare department.
When the students protested and said that they have clearly written on the form that their case was renewal, then why their names were put into the fresh candidates list, then the department took an application from the students asking them to mention that their case is renewal and not fresh.
But even after submission of application, there has been no action and scholarships are not provided to the students.
Varinder Jeet Singh also demanded in the letter that the scholarships come under the Prime Minister's minority employment scheme and they should be distributed by the central government itself rather than giving it to the respective states.
