Work on artificial lake to start soon | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 17: The Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr Taj Mohi-u-Din today inspected the discharge level in historical Ranbir and Partap Canals and pace of work at various places along the twin irrigation channels. The Paratp Canal feeding Akhnoor area with a discharge capacity of 500 cusecs has a command area of 22400 acres, while the historical 1400 cusecs capacity Ranbir Canal irrigates the area along its 60 KM length. The length of main Paratp Canal is 33.60 Km, while it has a network of 157 KM distributaries. At Partap Canal, the Minister inspected quality of modernization works completed under centrally sponsored Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP). An amount of Rs 47.60 crore is being spent on the modernization of the canal, out of which Rs 41.06 crore has been so far been incurred . Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control B.R. Dogra, Superintendent Engineer K. K. Gupta, AEE Bishnah Surjit Singh and other officials of the department accompanied the Minister during the day long tour. Interacting with the locals, the Minister said that the department has taken several measures to maintain sufficient discharge in all the vital canals to avoid any inconvenience to the farmers. The Minister said that the twin canals are the life line of Jammu, which is worldwide known for its Basmati rice. Taj directed the concerned authorities to keep a close watch on the discharge of water in their respective jurisdictions and ensure that each area gets adequate supply of irrigation water for the paddy crop. Referring to the proposed water barrage being developed on the River Tawi, the Minister said that, the upcoming Lake, besides augmenting the irrigation facility would also realize the dream of having an artificial lake in Jammu city.
