Lawyers burn their coats in protest | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 17: The general secretary of High Court Bar Association, Srinagar today registered protest against arrest of his president, Mian Abdul Qayoom by setting his black court ablaze in Lal Chowk. Around 150 lawyers took out a procession today to protest arrest of the Bar President Mian Abdul Qayoom who was detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) last week. The lawyers chanted anti-government slogans and demanded immediate release of their president. Later, the secretary, GN Shaheen Advocate torched his black coat outside the court complex to protest the arrest of the bar president. Scores of lawyers followed suit. Shaheen threatened Valley wide agitation incase release of Qayoom was delayed. On his call, the lawyers from across Kashmir assembled in the Sadder Court Complex to register their protest. He said lawyers were duty bound to provide legal assistance to detainees. "By arresting Mian Qayoom , the government has insulted all the lawyers", he said. Describing Qayoom's arrest an assault on judiciary, he said the lawyers shall continue their struggle against injustice.
