Mendhar encounter enters 5th day; JCO, jawan injured | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU/RAJOURI, July 17: As the gunbattle between security forces and militants in the Beri Rakh forests of Mendhar in Poonch entered 5th day, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) and a jawan of 37 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) were wounded today.As part of their strategy to find an escape route, the holed up militants have been changing locationss in the forest since Tuesday last when the encounter began. Two of them were killed by security forces Thursday after 48 hours of the gunfight. So far, army has lost a Major, while 11 others, including a Colonel and a Major, have suffered injuries in the encounter. Maj Amit Thenge was killed Tuesday when the militants had ambushed an army search party. In the ambush, Col Ajay Katoch and five jawans had sustained injuries.Maj J S Shekhawat, Naik Narinder Singh and rifleman Bhanu Pratap were injured yesterday. SSP, Poonch, Manmohan Singh said Subedar Vijay Kumar and sepoy Dewan Gandhi were injured in the exchange of fire with militants this morning. Both of them were hospitalised.Police sources said the militants did not fire a single shot last night. The firing between the two sides re-erupted at about 4 am today. The Subedar was injured at about 5.30 am and the sepoy at about 11 am, the sources added. The militants were not wasting their ammunition and had been firing only to keep the troops away from them. "They fire few shots in the morning and few in the evening. By doing so, they want the gunbattle to stretch further with the hope of finding an escape route," sources said. Multi-cordons had been placed around the area to hunt down the militants in case they attempted to flee, the sources added.Sources, however, said the troops might go for the final assault tonight, killing all the holed up militants. Security had also been enhanced in the nearby villages of Drana, Chajla, Bhati Dhar, Sinkan, Topa and Nagal Gali, the sources added. Sources also did not rule out the presence of underground bunkers in the forests. When reports last came in, troops were gradually closing in on the area where militants were suspected to be hiding.Sources said troops were also firing rockets towards the suspected hideouts of militants.
