Top LeT ultra held | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 17: Active since 1989 when terrorism raised its ugly head in the valley, a top and one of the longest surviving Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists was today apprehended by security forces from Chukron in Patnazi area of Kishtwar in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Identified as Mohammad Shafi Shah alias Pathan alias Idrees (35), son of Mohammad Yaqoob Shah, he hails from Ashmugam near Pahalgam in Anantnag, Kashmir. Police sources said he was a high ranking LeT terrorist and had been active in Anantnag and Kishtwar for the past two decades.Acting on a tip-off about his presence at Chukron, police and army jawans laid a cordon around the area late last night. Sources said when they started searches early this morning, they picked up his movement. On being challenged, he threw his rifle on the ground and fled. The jawans, however, caught hold of him after a hot chase. Apart from the AK rifle he had thrown, the jawans recovered from him three AK magazines along with 90 rounds, one radio set, one Pak SIM, three local SIMs and one mobile phone. He was whisked away to a police station in Kishtwar where his sustained interrogation was in progress. Sources said Pathan threw his weapon because he feared he would be killed by security forces if he opened fire. This clearly indicated a major change in the texture of the psychological make-up of the rank and file of the terrorist due to the increased pressure of security forces on them, the sources added.
