Restaurant theatre clicking, Chanakya abuzz with queries, says Shiv | | | SIDDHARTH A novel trend having hit the Jammu city through Restaurant Drama has clicked a spark of eager excitement among the restaurant goers to seek for the new trend having come into vogue. Alien to Jammu and Kashmir, such dramaturgy is a commonplace practice in foreign countries where theatre means a religion to the natives of the land. Here in Jammu, though theatre is practiced in four walled fortes with none of its content coming in direct contact with the common masses, an attempt envisaged by Vikram Sharma, the amateur theatrist of the state pursing his idiom drama through 'theatre of convenience' - a clinical professional approach to boost theatre among the common masses, broke the new ground through restaurant theatre. The collaborator, Chanakya Restaurnat at Green Belt Parks stands today as the first restaurant of the state to have earned the reputation for partnering the mega event that has become the talk of town overnight. A tête-à-tête with Shiv Kumar, the proprietor of Chanakya: ET: Your restaurant pioneered into the event as a collaborator that has started making rounds among the restaurant goers for queries about the magnum opus. How do you feel? Shiv: Vikram is my school time friend, and a seasoned artist who earns a reputed name in the state. Though he always keeps trying for something new, the plan to hold a show in restaurant was his idea that was immediately supported by me. We came up with the show despite a vulnerability attached to its accomplishment, but we succeeded wonderfully. Today I receive unending calls of queries on it and feel proud to be part of the show. ET: What was the most difficult and apprehensive part of the show that was for the first time being executed in the restaurant? Shiv: There were two important features that were discussed between me and Vikram threadbare about conducting the show. Since my restaurant has a seating capacity for 40 people with space just enough for the stewards moving in between for the serves. This was to be taken care of and Vikram had wanted only 30 people present at the time of the show. Secondly he had a vision that stewards must be serving in the performance but with a clinical precision not to disturb the performing actors in between. That was the most difficult part but my boys managed exceptionally. The second part was that since the play was a Hindi offbeat translated and adapted by Vikram in English that held a razor thin difference for getting fallen off in the wake of any miss. But, kudos to Vikram and Himanshu, the two performers who spellbound through their magnetic cliché of being numero uno stars of the state. ET: What are the future plans and how are you going to execute them? Shiv : We are anticipating to make such activity a regular show, initially on monthly basis, an attempt to reach masses in general outside the four walled drama of theatre. I am receiving many queries on the account and I have partnered with Vikram's Odeon Odyssey to make it a monthly show which later can be expanded into fortnightly and hopefully a weekly also. Chankya is open for any such activity that may help in promoting anything valuable for the people of Jammu and can make them stress free in the present heavy pressure living. Chankya's recipes are already a hit menu with the people which would be supplemented with theater-a Sone Pe Suhaga concept. |
