Pak leadership changing colours faster than kaleidoscope
BEHIND THE VEIL

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 18: If the latest statement from the Pakistan Foreign Minister,Shah Mehmood Qureshi,is any guide Islamabad seems to be changing its colours more rapaidly that the kaleidoscope.Till Friday the establishment in Pakistan, especially Qureshi, were enraged over what they termed as unprepardness on the part of Delhi to enter into a dialogue which had been the main factor for the the Thursday's talks between Qureshi and S.M.Krishna in Islamabad to have ended in a stalemate. On Saturday signals emanated one after the other from Islamabad indicating Pakistan's willingness to keep the dialogue process on which alone could dilute the trust deficit and promote friendly ties.
However,by Saturday evening Qureshi announed that he would not visit Delhi for a leisure trip and stated that he will fly to Delhi only if India was ready for a meaningful, constructive and result-oriented talks. He was again critical of the Indian team which he said simply concentrated on the Mumbai attacks, security and peace.Qureshi stated that the Indian side did not understand "our reservations when they made us to listen to their concerns over the Mumbai attack." He also stated that the Indian side should have understood Pakistan's problems and reservations.
Qureshi had been invited by Krishna to visit Delhi in order to continue the talks. When the invitation was offered to him he had accepted it and now by placing conditions the Foreign Minister of Pakistan either is not willing to see that talks are resumed as early as possible or he may be trying to mount pressure on Delhi so that it accepted all the terms and conditions of Islamabad for another session of talks.
Inside reports that that Islamabad has been encouragd by adopting defiant postures during and after the Thursday's talks by the Chinese.Though Beijing welcomed the Foreign ministry level talks,it did not want its, trusted friend,Islamabad,to show any concession to Delhi during the talks.China like the hardliners among the fndamentalists and the extremists believe that since India had been bleeding as a result of Pak-sponsored terrorism Delhi had more to lose if it did not support the dialogue process.Well Delhi has never opposed the process of dialogue and even when Islamabad did not initiate firm action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack and against Hafiz Saeed India reopened the channels of dialogue since February 25,when the Pakistan Foreign secretary,Salman Bashir, had visited Delhi to have a session with the Indian Foreign secretary,Nirupama Rao.
Another report said that since Pakistan was faced with economic crisis as a result of energy crisis, poor investment in industrial sector and on account of increase in the fiscal deficit and its inability to cut down expenses on unproductive activities it is trying to build antiIndia atmosphere for diverting peoples'attention from the real problems.Islamabad is as much convinced as Delhi is that friendly ties alone held the key to progress and peace in the entire south Asian region. This report said that after the Pak Army Chief,Ashraf Parvez Kayani, and the ISI had played their role in persuading the President,Asif Ali Zardari, and the Prime Minister,Yousuf Raza Gilani,to ask Qureshi to adopt defiant postures during the Thursday's talks Qureshi seems to have preferred to toe the Kayani's line.
Since the American secretary of State,Hillary Clinton,is visiting Islamabad for talks she may not miss to mount fresh pressure on the Pakistani leadership to keep the channels of dialogue open and try to resolve some of the problems which could reduce the trust deficit level and promote cordial ties between Pakistani and India.
