Electoral card recovered from Lashkar commandar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 19: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Mohammad Shafi Shah alias Pathan alias Idrees (35), who was captured by security forces from Chukron in Patnazi area of Kishtwar in the wee hours of Saturday morning, possessed an electoral photo identity card (EPIC). The card had been issued to him by a tehsildar, police sources said. Sources said it helped him to move freely without being caught by security forces. The EPIC served as a solid proof of his identity, the sources added, saying this helped him to save his real identity from police and security forces while moving in civilian areas. Sources said a probe had been initiated to enquire how the EPIC was issued to a militant without verifying his identity. He was one of the longest surviving militants and had been active since 1989 when terrorism had raised its ugly head in Kashmir, the sources added. Son of Mohammad Yaqoob Shah, he hails from Ashmugam near Pahalgam in Anantnag, Kashmir. Sources said he was a high ranking LeT terrorist and had been active in Anantnag and Kishtwar for the past two decades. He was spotted by jawans of police and army at Chukron early Friday morning. On being challenged, he had thrown his rifle on the ground and fled. The jawans, however, caught hold of him after a hot chase. Apart from the AK rifle he had thrown, he was found in possession of three AK magazines along with 90 rounds, one EPIC one radio set, one Pak SIM, three local SIMs and one mobile phone. Pathan threw his weapon because he feared he would be killed by security forces if he opened fire, the sources added.
