EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 19: The prevailing deteriorating situation in Kashmir valley has put a question mark on the role of civil society in Kashmir which instead of performing a positive role is maintaining a stoic silence.
Criticizing the role of civil society the people dependent on tourism trade daily work to earn their two times meal, blame the civil society for not performing a positive role in restoring normalcy in strife-torn valley.
Criticizing, the role of civil society, Mohammed Ramzan a trader in down town said the business community has been worst hit of the ongoing turmoil. Due to the ongoing strike the valley has suffered a loss of crores of rupees and if the situation will continue the people depending on daily wages have to face starvation. It has a high time for civil society of Kashmir to play its positive role in resolving the crisis, he added.
There are about 600 NGOs working in Kashmir valley but they situation as a mute spectator, said Gh.Qadir a retired Government employee. These NGOs were supposed to come forward and work as a bridge between separatists and Hurriyat conference in resolving the present impasse, he added.
Criticizing the functioning of these NGOs, he said instead of watching the situation as mute spectator, they should come out with an appeal to separatists to call off the strike for overall interests of common man in Kashmir who has already suffered a lot during 20 year long turmoil.
The people are also wary of separatist who have taken the masses to ransom by extending the strike call.
For last one month Kashmir is witnessing a complete shutdown and how for it will continue, asks Gh Rasool a fruit seller. " I was earning Rs. 200 daily by selling fruits at a busiest market in Srinagar city and feeding my six member family. But for last one month I have not earned a single penny and if situation persist like this, our family will face starvation."
The same is position with thousands of such families but nobody thinks about them, he said. Ghulam Rasool was also critical of the Government and he blamed it of playing a dubious role. The Government is not also sincere in resolving the issue by seeking services of civil society and prominent citizens in valley. He said presently there is a lot of resentment among masses against the separatists and militants but people hesitate in revolving against them as they apprehend threat from separatists and militants due to lack of security and support from Government.
