Immediate change of guard likely in National Conference | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 19: For the first time since its coming into being, the National Conference (NC) may be headed by a non-Sheikh family member, or to put it plainly `by an outsider' in the coming days. This is what people close to the organization anticipate. Interestingly, the affairs of the organization may no longer remain a ‘private affair’ of the Sheikh family. The rift in the NC leadership came to surface a few months ago when a New Delhi based newspaper reported it. The report said a ‘close friend’ of the Chief Minister did not like seniors like Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Muhammad Sagar. The report, quoting sources, mentioned that senior Ministers, Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Muhammad Sagar would be relieved off their portfolios shortly. The report almost created cracks in the National Conference. The government had to come out with a statement denying the report. Highly placed sources in the National Conference said the report was based on facts and not by any means a figment of reporter's imagination. "Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Muhammad Sagar are Dr Farooq's loyalists. Omar Abdullah's close friend does not like them for various reasons", they revealed. The sources further said that Rahim Rather and Ali Muhammad Sagar do not like the close friend's growing influence over Omar Abdullah. The controversy came to fore once again yesterday when local English daily reported that a minister had purchased property in Dubai's Pal Beach Island. The Chief Minister has taken serious note of the news report. The scribe has been asked to identify the minister. According to sources, the vital information was leaked to the newspaper by Chief Minister's `close friend'. Incidentally Abdul Rahim Rather is one of the ministers to visit Dubai recently. The NC leadership, sources said, is seriously considering relieving Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Muhmmad Sagar from their portfolios. Sources further said Rather may occupy the presidential berth in the National Conference. Ali Muhammad Sagar, they believe, will act as General Secretary. At present, Sheikh Nazir who has been used as a poster boy of the organization holds the post of General Secretary. Nazir is the senior most member of the organization and exercises influence over the cadres. He also happens to be a member of the Sheikh family. Replacing him, therefore, will not be easy for Omar. And Sagar is equally influential in Srinagar. Can Omar afford to annoy him at this juncture?
