Party dissidents indulging in anti-Govt activities: Soz loyalists | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 19: Senior congress leaders, including a couple of ministers, loyal to the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, have alleged that the Government headed by Omar Abdullah faced a bigger threat from the Congress dissidents than from the PDP. While expressing deep concern over the machinations of the dissidents a congress Minister said that their activities were not only weakening the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir but also posing a major threat to the Omar led Government. He explained that the purpose of the dissidents to weaken the Congress and create added aches for the Government was to kick up a situation in which the Congress led Government in the centre was forced to replace Omar Abdullah by Ghulam Nabi Azad. Another Minister said that the dissidents, a conglomerate of party men rejected by the voters in previous elections, were trying to get themselves politically rehabilitated by Azad once he was installed as Chief Minister. The loyalists said that the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, had been trying hard to keep the Congress flock together but the dissidents were creating problems for him. On occasions, the dissidents initiated certain measures that challenged the leadership of Soz. Senior Congress leaders said that Omar Abdullah was keen to maintain cordialities with the Congress and in support of their contention they said that the Chief Minister always consulted his ministerial colleagues in the Congress whenever he intended to take an important decision. One Minister said that till date Omar has never said "no" to any suggestion from any Congress minister or leader. Minister said that on occasions the dissidents did not even respond to the telephonic calls from Soz. They would not even respond to the letters he would send to them on party matters. He said it was very unfortunate that the dissidents were adding to the problems of the coalition Government which was faced with a difficult situation because of the machinations of the separatists and the agencies across the border. Senior Congress functionaries wanted the party high command to take stern measures that were required to discipline the dissidents. They said that administering a dose of warning to some dissidents, who had been recently summoned to Delhi, would not set the party matters right. One senior party leader said that even after having received a dose of warning the dissidents continued to indulge in anti-party and anti-Government activities when they should have realised that any change in the guard at present could have serious ramifications on the state's political scenario. |
