JAMMU, July 20: With alarming increase in the population in the urban centres in the state, the Power Development Department (PDD) has failed to provide regular supply of electricity to the consumers. The people are facing many hardships because of shortage of power supply and unscheduled power cuts in this scorching heat.
In these days of rainy season, when humidity is at its peak, unscheduled power cuts are making life hell for the Jammuties and people of the adjoining areas. Condition is same in the rural areas of the state.
As per sources actual need of the state for all purposes is about 2000 Mega Watts but only 1200 Mega Watts from all purposes is available for all purposes. There is deficiency of 800 mega watts in the state resulting in imposition of 8-9 hours power cuts in the state.
As the Jammu city and its adjoining areas continue to reel under severe power crisis marked with frequent long and unscheduled power curtailments a which some times ranges from 10-12 hours in this hot and humid weather.
Interestingly, PDD is headed by the Chief Minister of the state itself. Insiders in the PDD opined that condition in the winter capital could be improved if portfolio is allotted to other person as Chief Minister is over burdened and pre occupied.
"The issue of these unscheduled power cuts always remain on pinnacle in our state even after installation of electronic meters. When these meters were installed, PDD had assured that after installation of regular power is to be supplied but the condition is same even after installation of electronic meters".
Even farming community is unhappy over the unscheduled power curtailments and stated that this was affecting their farming activities, as sowing season for rice is at its peak and regular supply of power is needed.
When tried to contact Chief Engineer PDD Mohammad Qazmi, he out rightly refused to comment on the issue.
