Cong keeps flag of 'factionalism aloft'
DDB witnesses heat on political front
7/20/2010 11:00:28 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 20: While issues and aspects related to development front went off smoothly in the Jammu District Development Board Meeting held here today, the high profiled meeting witnessed some heat generated on political front, that too between the leaders of one party- Congress, the major alliance partner of NC led coalition government. Sources said in the midst of the day long meeting in reference to a particular point the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council ARvinder Singh Micky raised the issue of New Block Gandhi Nagar Hospital and said that name plate of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been removed from the foundation stone plaque and in its place a new name plate had been installed. Expressing his reservations and concern he said the name plate of a person who laid the foundation stone should not have been removed. Reacting sharply to this observation, the Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma quipped and swiftly refuted the allegation contending name plate has not been removed and in fact both the name plates ( one laid at the time of foundation stone and other at the time of inauguration on CM Omar Abdullah's name) are lying there. Sources said heated arguments that virtually led to verbal duel continued for nearly 5-7 minutes during which other issues were put on hold. While it was a 'political show' for all others to enjoy, seeing no end to the arguments, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had to intervene ultimately to pacify the tempers of two young Congress leaders. Sources said he would personally verify the facts about the name plates and also instruct corrective measures, if needed. The duel between the two leaders was indeed a refreshing break from the monotony of lengthy meeting focused mainly around 'dry and drab' development issues for the legislators as well. Interestingly, sources added that Chief Minsiter later asked the Deputy Commissioner Jammu MK Diwedi to visit the hospital and check personally the facts over which the 'fight' erupted between two senior leaders of the same party. While DC immediately followed the orders and is reported to have visited the hospital at the end of the meeting, it is yet to be ascertained what actually he found and 'reported to the CM. However, the skirmishes between the two leaders on a seemingly non issue that too during the presence of hundreds of officials and legislators of all the political parties only goes on to suggest that Congress leaders in the state have almost the keep alive the flag of 'factionalism' and are ever prepared to take the sides with either side of the two predominant lobbies.
The meeting also witnessed some heated argument , albeit from a member of the opposition BJP on some other issue. Soucres said BJP MLA Ashok Khajuria raised objection to what he questioned that in what capacity the Congress leader and former Minister Gulchain Singh Charak was continuing the post of vice chairman of the prestigious Heritage Committee meant for restoring the glory of the Mubarak Mandi Complex. However, no one, not even CM responded.
